I am a multidisciplinary designer, developer, and consultant with 20+ years of experience in building digital products.

I specialize in human-centered design and scalable UI systems for web applications and other software.

I design and I code with equal expertise.I’m old enough to have lived through several hype cycles, and curious enough to never stop learning. Junior designers and developers especially benefit from my approachable guidance, while stakeholders value my pragmatic advice.

Rooted in craftsmanship, my goal is to pick the best tools and methods for the job, to create the best possible outcome. I encourage fast prototyping and exploration as a starting point.

Branding Strategy UI/UX Design Web Development

The FinTech startup had built a fully functional prototype for trading digital assets. My role was comprehensive — I named the product, designed the logo, took on the entire UI/UX design, and developed the front-end.

Thanks to close collaboration with the founder, who was also responsible for back-end development, and my cross-disciplinary skills, we were able to build a highly complex product, structurally ready for fast scaling, in a relatively short time and with minimal overhead.

Within a very short time, Adjust grew from a start-up to a global industry leader. The company had accumulated software developed in-house and through acquisitions, resulting in significant inconsistencies across design and functionality.

I led the project to develop a comprehensive design system. We built a dedicated team, created a unified design language, developed UI components and produced detailed documentation. I also ran workshops and training sessions to equip the team to maintain and expand the system.

The result is a unified software suite delivering a more consistent user experience, consolidated internal knowledge, and scalable architecture and processes — which have significantly accelerated and simplified Adjust’s product development.

After its founding, Yoshino needed to establish a location in Berlin. I was responsible for assembling a small cross-functional team and setting up the office.

My role encompassed team management, design and development direction for UI/UX and front-end work, and individual mentoring. Together we successfully completed numerous complex projects for clients across various industries.

We conceived, designed, and developed a large corporate website for eGym, a manufacturer of connected premium gym equipment.

Lynx

We advised the in-house design team of Amsterdam-based online broker Lynx on the redesign of their international corporate website and the associated development of an accompanying design system.

Aristander

We developed the brand and product design for Aristander, a price prediction start-up built on machine-learning.

YOI

To produce the many microsites we built, we needed a flexible, framework-agnostic front-end system. I built a well-documented system, anticipating concepts that are now taken for granted, such as CSS utility classes and JavaScript interactions driven by a simple HTML attribute API.

Teaching Visual Programming Curriculum Design

I developed an introductory course for Scratch (a visual programming language for children), for the Berlin-based »Digitalwerkstatt«, run by the renowned German toy manufacturer Haba.

Working in small groups, children from grades one to four created their own games using simple modules I had developed beforehand (button controls, collision detection, and similar building blocks). The playful process enabled the children to learn the basics of programming — at their own pace and with direct reference to their own projects.

At the peak of the 2010s VR/AR hype, shortly after the Google Glass release, a colleague and I started wondering: could Spatial Computing and Augmented Reality be combined to create something useful for everyday life that actually delivered meaningful benefit to its users?

We secured modest private funding and I put together a small independent team of developers and designers to build a prototype. The concept was simple but innovative: the smartphone camera recognizes key surfaces in the room — say, a page in a magazine — and activates interactive content as soon as the device is placed on it. A small interactive island within otherwise static content.

We produced a functional technical prototype and an elaborate concept video. The endeavor did not result in a real product, however, it was a fascinating exploration nonetheless.

IBM iX DACH (formerly Aperto) Freelance Oct 2013—Jun 2014

I consulted for IBM iX (formerly Aperto) on a Volkswagen project: a multimedia website with numerous interactive features, embedded videos, and page transitions that had previously only been possible with Flash.

Drawing on my experience with a similar project for DDB, I was able to guide the team through the planning and implementation of a technically demanding design.

I assisted the agency KircherBurkhardt in developing mobile web apps for the German financial newspapers Handelsblatt and Wirtschaftswoche. The timeframe was tight and required us to rethink the design workflow. Working closely with the designers, we shifted from producing static design assets in Photoshop to designing directly in the browser.

This setup eliminated the need for an interactive prototype, accelerated the process, and allowed the customer to view the current status of implementation at any time. At launch, we had built a state-of-the-art web app for phones and tablets with extensive theming architecture — producing app.handelsblatt and app.wiwo — with a user experience similar to native smartphone apps at the time.

DDB Berlin designed a website for the new VW Beetle with a strong focus on interactive storytelling, using virtually every cutting-edge web technology available at the time. The scroll-driven experience even allowed users to navigate the desktop site via swipe gestures on a companion smartphone app.

I was responsible for the technical implementation, and together with a freelance colleague developed a complex framework to drive video and parallax animations through scrolling.

The site was technically impressive, set new standards for interactive storytelling on the web, and won a few major design awards.

I designed the first iPhone app for Motor Talk, Europe’s largest online car community. Working closely with the iOS developer, we created an app with great attention to detail and an elaborate skeuomorphic design typical of the time.

The company — formerly Team Europe — commissioned me to optimize a front-end project for significant scale. The result was a white-label business directory with an integrated editorial section that gave listed companies a platform to publish content, driving strong Google search rankings.

I worked on the theming system that enabled the rapid production of numerous verticals with minimal effort, helping the start-up establish a strong market position.

After graduating, I went to work forGosub Communications. The company was among Berlin’s leading digital agencies at the time and specialized in complex, interactive digital experiences.

I worked across numerous projects for clients including ARD, ZDF, SAT1, SF (now SRF), MTV, Nickelodeon, BMW, Universal Music, and Ferrero, among others.

Those were pivotal years for web design: with the advent of the iPhone, Flash was on the decline, and my early specialization in native web standards (HTML, CSS, JS) significantly broadened the agency’s skill set.

Ferrero

I was the design director for the Hanuta website — an interactive experience inside the fictive Hazelwood Forest, a brand universe inspired by Robin Hood. The result was part game, part website: an explorable landscape with multiple levels, each containing exploration tasks or mini-games. A leaderboard with an avatar editor rounded off the experience.

Schweizer Fernsehen

I was the leading web developer for Schweizer Fernsehen’s children’s programming website. At its core was a child-friendly community, a media library with a comment function, and various small Flash games.

The visually rich design with analogue elements — torn paper edges, hand-drawn squiggly lines, and a distinct color scheme for each channel — posed a major technical challenge for the time. The end result was a richly designed site with fast loading times and semantic HTML.
